E-cigarettes helping smokers quit and breathe easier: New London study

December 15 2015

E-cigarettes are helping London smokers to reduce their cigarette-use or kick the habit completely – according to new research presented at the British Thoracic Society Winter Meeting today (Thursday 3rd December 2015)
The Croydon Respiratory Team’s (CRT) pilot study analysed the use, and impact, of e-cigarettes among people using Croydon’s stop smoking and lung health services.
The research, undertaken by questionnaire among 50 smokers and ex-smokers, (35% of whom had received a diagnosis of chronic lung disease – COPD), found that:

  • 80% of the sample had used e-cigarettes on their own, or in combination with other nicotine replacement products
  • 42% had reduced their cigarette-use
  • 38% had quit cigarettes completely
  • 52% reported improvements in their breathing
  • 18% reported a reduction in sputum

Interestingly the study also found that whilst all patients taking part wanted to stop smoking cigarettes, they did not have a deadline to stop using e-cigarettes.

The researchers believe that although this is a local study of people using stop smoking services in a hospital setting in Croydon, it does highlight the popularity of e-cigarettes among those smokers either wanting to quit or reduce their tobacco consumption.

Dr Roshan Siva, consultant lung specialist at Croydon Health Services NHS Trust, says:
As the use of e-cigarettes increases and becomes a more recognised way to quit smoking, more research is needed to inform and shape future NHS smoking cessation services.
If e-cigarettes are formally incorporated into NHS stop smoking programmes, it will be important to address the issue of people phasing out, and ultimately quitting, their use of e-cigarettes rather than continuing to use them indefinitely.

Dr Sanjay Agrawal, consultant lung specialist & Chair of the British Thoracic Society’s Tobacco Special Advisory Group, said:
Our response to e-cigarettes must be led by the evidence. The key issue is around 10 million Britons still smoke tobacco with one in two long term smokers dying from their habit. So it’s vital we explore every opportunity to support people to quit. And e-cigarettes are a very popular way to cut down or kick the habit. So we need to study how we can best use their potential – alongside all the other ways to stop smoking.
There is no doubt that e-cigarettes are less harmful than tobacco – but we must also continue to study their long term health effects.
According to existing national research studies:

  • There are now 2.6 million adults using electronic cigarettes – of which nearly two out of five are ex-smokers and three out of five are current smokers
  • Ex-smokers say they are using electronic cigarettes to help them stop smoking whilst smokers are using them to reduce the amount they smoke
  • Between 2010 and 2014 there was a rise in the number of current smokers who also use e-cigarettes, from 2.7% in 2010 to 17.6% in 2014
  • The increase in the number of people using e-cigarettes between 2014 and 2015 came almost entirely from ex-smokers – rising from 4.5% in 2014 to 6.7% in 2015[1]
  • There are 10 million adult smokers in Great Britain and surveys suggest that two thirds of these want to quit, but that only 30% to 40% make an attempt to stop in any given year[2].

Having gone from smoking a pack a day for almost a decade to giving up cigarettes with vaping, I’m surprised that the number of people who had completely quit in this study was only 38%.

I smoked 40 cigarettes a day and have tried all the NRT products (patches, gum, champix etc) despite using these products and genuinely wanting to quit I just couldn`t do it, I started vaping five weeks ago and although I know that it is still early days I can honestly say that I have not touched (or wanted) a cigarette in that time, I don`t wheeze when lying in bed at night, my persistent irritating cough has gone, I feel better in myself, my clothes and hair do not smell and I am saving an awful amount of money (cigarette spend was on average £130/$193 per week!!) and I still get that “kick” that the cigarette gave me and the alternative products did not although I am now down to 0.6% nicotine content and working towards nicotine free liquid.

I’ll confirm that – 30 a day for 30 years, I never thought it would be as easy. Three months have flown by.

Due to moving to not the greatest neighborhood when I was 6, I met the wrong people and started playing around with smoking cigarettes. I then fully starting smoking when I was about 10. Now I am 27 and I finally quit smoking because of vaping. I didn’t just cut my cigarette use down, I eliminated it completely. Now I can finally breathe. My oxygen level was so low for years. I could be at a sit still for over an hour with an oxygen level of only 94%. When I was off cigarettes for only a month and had a doctors appointment, that I walked to mind you, my oxygen read 99%. It hasn’t been that good since I was a child. Even my circulation is getting better. My feet don’t just turn purple from just sitting on the couch anymore. Vaping is changing my life for the better and I hope that it can do the same for others.

Inspiring story! Thank you for sharing 🙂 Vape on!

I have been vaping for 2yrs and I can’t understand why only 38% of smokers have quit using this method. I’ve found it just as satisfying as cigarettes but also withadded benefits such as less than a quarter of the price , I’ve more breath , I don’t smell like an ash tray and I’ve more energy than I’ve had for years . I even get that hit at the back of the throat , that you obviously dont get with patchs or gum.vaping nicotine has turned my life around . Brilliant. Any cigarrette smoker would be a fool not to check it out in my opinion. Oh one more thing I’m not causing anyone else any damage like you do smoking a cigarette in the company of other people. Vaping is awesome. Every cigarette smoker should at least try it, you can’t loose.

I been smoking a pack a day for over 20 plus years. I haven’t touched a Cigarette in over 2 months and have no plans to. I like vaping and it relaxes me plus my new truck don’t smell like an Ashtray it smells like Cinnamon Apple Muffin thanks to my “Muffin Man juice”. There is not future in Smoking cigs plus they keep raising the Price. Also I did tons of Research and decided to go with a Innokin Cortex. Since then I have ordered 3 more for my Best Friends and Wife. It’s nice to get a new juice and kick back. So get you one and do it.

    Innokin Frank Posted on6:46 pm - Feb 18, 2016

Awesome James! Thanks for supporting Innokin and congrats on quitting cigarettes!

Rick Posted on5:19 am - Feb 21, 2016

I’ve bought about a half a dozen batteries over the past 3 years; however, I bought my first itaste product, from Innokin Technology, earlier this week. I bought their CLK 1280 battery and think it is the best designed and longest lasting battery for vaping that I have owned so far. So thanks “itaste”, Great Work and Great Product!

I was a pack a day smoker for over 40 years. In early 2013, when I started vaping, my intention was to add vaping for places where I could not smoke cigarettes; which meant never having to go through that “I have to have a cigarette now feeling” and with no intentions, at all, of quitting cigarettes; vaping has cut my cigarette consumption down to less than (at most) 3 per day for about the past 18 months, and this is still without ever trying to quit cigarettes.

What a strange twist from what I originally started out trying to do with vaping and how starting vaping has turned out for me; it has almost completely removed cigarettes from my life. I sincerely thank everyone involved in the Vaping Industry for what vaping has done for me.

I have been vaping since new years day 2016…I was a smoker for more than 40 years. I was fed up with smokers cough and wheezing which affected my sleep pattern..my doctor told me that it will take more than a year for the nicotine to have any proper benefit to my health I have stopped weezing and my sense of smell and taste have improved.. using my cool fire 4 is the only reason I have not smoked any gigarettes for nearly 2 months.

I have been a pack and a half a day cigarette smoker since 1976. Camel Lights from the day they were released, and American Spirit Yellows for a number of years. I’ve tried everything. Wellbutrin, patch, gum, I even took the Welplex treatment in 2006. It was intense. Google it. I talked to people at work that have been successful with smoking cessation by vaping. I did a lot of research and YouTube video watching, decided to skip all the beginner products, and bought the Innokin COOLFIRE IV PLUS and a couple of iSub tanks from Mad Vapes in Rock Hill SC. I smoked two cigarettes the first day, one the second day, one drag the third day, and have not smoked one for a week. Not long, but I feel different (in a good way) already, and I feel in control. Lots more fun than reaching for that yellow pack 30 times a day, knowing that it is going to taste like crap, but reaching anyway. The flavor choices are unlimited, and I switch up flavors all day. The technology leaps in mods, tanks, and juices feels like the internet of the 90’s. Brick and mortar Vape stores are on fire. Every smoker should consider this alternative to cigarettes. I’ve been vaping high VG content juice in both 6mg and 12mg.

I have been a heavy smoker for 50 years and have tried all the British NHS methods of quitting to no avail. I was smoking 40 cigarettes a day until I decided to give vaping a try and to my complete surprise never touched another cigarette from day 1. I am now 13 months as a non smoker having saved £3800 pounds in that time and am now down to 3mg nicotine juice and heading for 0mg within the next 2 months. I have just bought a COOLFIRE 4 with iSub tank and the difference is amazing compared to my previous device. I can’t say my health has particularly improved but given my previous smoking habit I would expect a gradual improvement. In short changing to vaping was the best decision I have made, it’s just a pity it took so long to discover the benefits.

I had been a pack a day smoker for over 30 years. I found out that I have problems with my circulation an lost my left leg due to it. I tried everythingto quit. NOTHING worked! I always ended up smoking again. 14 months ago I threw out my last cigarette and bought a vaporizer. I haven’t looked back. It was so easy compared to everything else I had tried. An because I FINALLY quit smoking I was able to have the same problems in my right leg fixed an I’ve still got it!! Thank you Innokin…
I do have one question if anyone can answer…I have to change the coil about every 3 to 4 days. What am I doing wrong? I use my puff counter an average between 300 & 400 a day.

Paul Posted on10:32 pm - May 29, 2016

Just started vaping to give up smoking 14 days no fags and anybody thinking of giving up the only mod you will need is the cool fire 4.and a tank.Paul.

I have smoked for nearly forty years. I was smoking about 25 to 30 smokes a day and started vaping two years and 2 mos. ago. When I first started I didn’t know better and started with e cigs and never could get enough smoke/nicotine out of them. Then I tried innokin. I have not smoked a cigarette since the beginning and don’t want to, ever. I have 3 mpv 3.0’s that i cycle through throughout the days. I’ve never had to replace a battery. I’ve lost a few along the way but I love this mod with my Sub G tanks. The only thing to go wrong with them is when I drop them on a hard surface and crack the glass. So far I can’t find anywhere to just replace the glass tank, but would really be happy if you would sell them on your site. When I started vaping I was at a 24 mg nicotine then about every six months I have dropped to 18mg, 12mg and am now at six. Soon it will be time to drop to 3 mg and then none. It has been effortless doing it this way! I only buy my products at MtBakervapor.com for two years now. I get a giant 236 ml bottle of high vg Peppermint Bark juice for only $30. Since I found my favorite I don’t even have to try other flavors but it took me a year and a half to find it. I also buy my innokin products through this company and don’t think I’ll ever leave them. They are quick and reliable, great customer service too. Hope I’ve helped someone find some high quality vaping supplies. I promise I don’t have any other interest in the company. You just need to check them out and find yourself an awesome mod to vape away!

I also will admit to smoking for the better part of 10 years and still being young enough to make a difference I started vaping with the Isub v 5ml tank on abother brand mod..

No cigarettes for 3 months and plan to keep the trend so hopefully my children won’t pick up the habit of cigarettes.

Wow what a difference in taste, smell, and wallet!

As a previous smoker I can tell you 100% that vaping helps you quit and you breathe easier. I don’t think they are totally harmless, but they are MUCH better than traditional tobacco products. I used them to quit smoking, and now smoke nothing, so it was a working system for me!

Stankopil.ru Posted on9:02 am - Sep 6, 2016

A recent study by The British Journal of Psychiatry has found that smokers who successfully quit feel less anxious afterwards with the effect being greater among those who had mood and anxiety disorders than those that smoked for pleasure.

I just picked up my Innokin T18 today and I am ecstatic! Actually, my (non-smoking) boyfriend got it for me after I’d done some research and asked around (thanks, r/electronic_cigarette!), and then watched some youtube reviews. I up-graded from an eGo-T that I bought over the summer and had been using more and more alongside smoking cigarettes. As I started turning more to the e-cig than the stinky cigarettes I figured I needed to get a better device. I used to smoke about a pack a day, and I feel so much better now that I successfully have made the switch (which I honestly had my doubts about ever achieving) – and quitting cigs honestly hasn’t been hard as it just kind of gradually happened. Just so excited and wanted to share. Great vape, everyone 🙂
